Empathy in Because of Winn DIxie

Lesson Summary:

After reading Chapter 1 of Because of Winn Dixie students volunteer their thoughts on whether or not it was o.k. for India to lie to the store manager about who the dog belonged to. Students will begin to see the complexity involved in caring for someone else.

Lesson Summary:

The class discusses the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In pairs, students are given a situation related to the attacks and discuss how they would feel if they were put into the situation. After discussion in pairs, the students discuss their situations with the whole class.

Lesson Summary:

Students will discuss how violence affects their schools and how to improve the situation. Through a video, class discussions, and a survey students develop a report stating how one person can make a difference, how without an audience bullying cannot exist, and how empathy is the first step to stopping violence.
