One important outcome of the schooling system is the number of students who graduate from high school. As indicated by the figure below the American system has made substantial gains in this regard during the past 100 years.

The most common measurement of student learning outside the classroom is Student Achievement of Standardized Tests of Basic Skills

However, there are a variety of other measures of student learning that are becoming increasing important.
