The Process

 

 

Activity One

Working with a partner you will explore how experiences in early adulthood impact perceptions, ideas, values, and goals.

  1. Read about Paul Simon’s life (1971-1975).
  2. Click on lyrics link or download file to read the lyrics to The Sound of Silence.
  3. Listen to a sample of Paul Simon singing The Sound of Silence.
  4. Interpret/reflect on overall feelings evoked by the song.
  5. With your partner/group discuss how Paul Simon’s early adulthood impacted his perceptions, ideas, values, and goals as expressed in the song The Sound of Silence.
  6. Summarize and write 1-2 pages on your interpretation of the song in terms of Paul Simon’s life (1971-1975).

Activity Two

Working with a partner or in a small group you will explore how experiences in early adulthood impact perceptions, ideas, values, and goals.

  1. Read about Paul Simon’s life (1975-1990).
  2. Click on lyrics link or download file to read the lyrics to Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.
  3. Listen to a sample of Paul Simon singing Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.
  4. Interpret/reflect on overall feelings evoked by the song.
  5. Summarize and write a 1-2 page paper on your interpretation of the song in terms of Paul Simon’s life.
  6. With the class, discuss how Paul Simon’s early adulthood impacted his perceptions, ideas, values, and goals as expressed in his song Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.

Activity Three

Working individually you will explore how experiences in older adulthood impact perceptions, ideas, values, and goals.

  1. Listen to and read the lyrics to You’re the One.
  2. Read about Paul Simon’s life in the previous two to five years before writing these songs.
  3. Interpret/Reflect on overall feelings evoked by the songs.
  4. Summarize and write a one to two page paper on how Paul Simon’s older adulthood impacted his perceptions, ideas, values, and goals as expressed in his You’re the One.

Final Activity

Working individually, you will focus on adult development issues and the songs of Paul Simon that express these themes. The first part will require the student to analysis a group of songs that deal with particular theme. Then the student will take part in a creative activity producing an original artwork that address the chosen theme.

Step One: Analysis/Critical Thinking Activity

The summative evaluation activity will have students complete the analysis/critical thinking process using set of songs concerning one of a variety of themes below.

Step Two: Synthesis/Creative Thinking Activity

For the expansion or creative activity students will produce an original artwork addressing the theme they discussed in the critical thinking activity.
